I.C.R. serves general contactors’ needs for drywall services in the greater Boston and Southern New Hampshire region. The company secures business through several different methods described as follows: A. responses to requests for bidsThe company utilizes industry resources to identify projects seeking bids for drywall services; the size of projects, the general contracting company involved, the type of project, location, chances of winning, and union or prevailing wage requirements are all taken into consideration in deciding whether to commit to the substantial effort of preparing a formal bid. B. direct negotiation with general contractors not seeking other bidsI.C.R. works closely with several general contracting companies that will request a proposal for a project that is not put out to bid from other drywall companies. This method is the preferred way of acquiring new business – lowest price is not the key factor in getting the job. In this relationship, the general contractor knows and trusts the workmanship of the company and is seeking the best contractor to get the job done in a quality manner with a sub contractor that is trusted. I.C.R. continues to develop these relationships; currently, about 30-35% of the work is negotiated this way; the goal is to raise this up to 50-60%. Attaining this goal will cut down on proposal preparation time and cost that is wasted in the general bidding wars where only one or two of twenty bids are won. C. referrals from suppliers and othersI.C.R. maintains close relationships with its suppliers who hear of new projects and often refer the company to the project or make them aware of the opportunity. Many times the results are a negotiated bid rather than competitive bidding situation. This situation helps to expand the group of general contractors willing to work with the company in this way. Construction in the region has been very active over the past several years and has driven the rapid I.C.R. growth. The outlook for new construction is down from the last two years but new business for 2002 is strong – Much of the backlog work is for new and renovated school buildings. This market has remained strong while commercial building has slowed due to the economic recession of the past two quarters. The General Contracting companies that I.C.R. regularly works with include some of the largest and most respected in the Boston area:
